Nanjing's city walls date to the beginning of the Ming dynasty. The are some of the largest and best preserved city walls in China. Truly they are massive. On the south side of the city was a huge gate known coloquially as Zhouhua Gate (China Gate). The gate structure stands today largely as it was then. This fortress was once the main route in and out of the city and makes for an interesting historical visit.
