Shamian Island was formerly the British and French concession in Guangzhou. It was here that these two foreign powers set up their consulates and business offices. The buildings and streets of the former British and French concession have been preserved, creating an area with an other-worldly quality in an otherwise busy and modern city. One notable structure is the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel. The architecture of the area is typical of the colonial era of the 19th Century.
