Scenic Lijiang River in Guilin is a river cruise route. It runs form just outside Guilin city, south, to Yangshuo city. On route you pass through some of the most spectacular landscapes. The mountains on either side of the river are formed from limestone karst. They have weathered into impossibly steep towers. The sides of the mountains are covered in ancient pine forests and bamboo groves. As you pass along the river, local fishermen work on traditional bamboo rafts and water buffalo wade in the river. This creates a timeless atmosphere of an ancient rural culture.

There are two main choices for viewing the river scenery. The most popular is to take one of the large cruise boats that run up and down the river form Guilin to Yangshuo. There are two levels of cruise ships, one for local Chinese and another for foreigners. The later is more expensive than the former but also the level of service on board is higher. An alternative the cruise boats is to hire a private bloat. This allows you more time to relax and enjoy the scenery. However, they lack the facilities of the larger boats. Private boats can vary in size, some are simply bamboo rafts with a deck chair on top.
