Tài Shān (泰山风景名胜区) is the most famous and most revered mountain in China. It is located in the west of Shandong Province near the city of Tai'an. At the top of the mountain is a temple to longevity. It is said that climbing the mountain and worshipping there will give you a long life. The mountain was popular with the emperors of China, five of whom climbed the hill. The emperor Qianlong did so 11 times. In recent times the mountain was climbed by famous people including Mao Zedong. During Michael Palin's tour, "Full Circle" he climbed Taishan. There are 3 options for climbers. The full walk of 7.5 miles and 6,660 steps to the summit, a bus ride most of the way up and a walk for the last 600 or so steps to the peak, or else a cable car runs to very near the top.
