America was the first country to develop nuclear weapons. The Russians soon caught up and the Chinese saught to follow. In the early 1950's, China a Russia had a good colaboration and Russian experts assisted China to develop neclear projects. However, after Stalin's death, China and Russia entered a period of hostility. Russian advisors were with drawn and China went on to develop nuclear bombs by themselves. The first Chinese built bomb was tested in the Lop Nor area of Xinjiang in 1964. Much of the experimental work that lead to that test was done in Haiyan city of Qinghai, where this museum now stands.
