Qinghai Lake is a major site for migratory birds. As the cross central Asia, the lake is a key resource for the brids. Bird island, in the north west section of the lake, receives a particularly large influx of these travellers making it one of the densest bird populations in the world. Tens of thousands of birds can be seen on the island. The island can be divided into an east an west section. The west section is known as Haixishan (Mountain of the west sea) or Xiaoxishan (small west mountain). Here in the month of April, albatross and seagulls throng to lay eggs and hatch young. The east area is Haixipi, which is particularly popular with cormorants.
